Paying a prepaid line from abroad or for family overseas

Families split across countries still share a US prepaid number. The person who holds the phone may be visiting relatives, studying, or working abroad. The person with the card may be in the United States, or the other way around. The payment page does not know your family story. It knows a ten-digit number and an email.

Northline validates a US number. A mobile number from another country's dialing plan will not pass. This guide is about paying a US prepaid line while people are in different places. It is not a guide to international airtime products, and it does not promise that a credit appears before a flight or a deadline.

Agree the number in one format

US numbers are ten digits after the country code. People abroad often write +1 and then the ten digits, or they write a local zero that does not belong. Drop the +1. Do not add a trunk prefix. Read the ten digits back. If you are speaking across a noisy call, use a message thread you already trust and ask them to type the number, then you type it back.

Time zones cause a specific mistake. They check the balance in the morning their time, you pay in the evening your time, and they look again before your payment has been submitted. Agree a moment when both of you will look, after you have an order reference, not before.

Put the receipt where the payer can open it

The receipt email should belong to the person who may need a refund or a lookup. That is usually the cardholder, not the person holding the phone overseas. A receipt that lands in an inbox nobody checks is how references get lost.

If the cardholder cannot receive mail reliably, pick an inbox both of you can open, and say so out loud. Do not use a temporary address that expires in an hour. The lookup later uses that same email or the last four digits of the phone number.

Card country and prepaid country are different questions

A US prepaid number does not mean the card must be issued in the United States. Whether a processor accepts a particular card is the processor's decision when payments are open. Northline does not publish a list of accepted countries, because that list would go stale and would sound like a guarantee.

While payments are closed, none of this charges a card. The waitlist takes an email. If you need the line funded today, use a path the account holder already uses with their provider. Do not wait on a waitlist email for a same-day need.

Fees and currency

Northline prices in US dollars. Your card issuer may add a foreign-transaction amount if the card is from another country. That amount is not our fee and it will not appear on our receipt. Ask the issuer if you need to know it in advance. Our fee rule remains the one on the Fees page: percentage rounded to the cent, plus a fixed amount, floor of one dollar, promo off the fee only.

If you cannot see the phone

You cannot watch their balance screen. Ask them to read the balance before and after, and to send a screenshot to you on the channel you already trust. Compare the last four digits on your receipt with the number they read. If the credit does not show and a payment was captured, use the refund rule. Do not pay a second site because the first screenshot is late. Overnight gaps are normal when you are many hours apart. Agree that silence until the agreed check time is not a failure. A late screenshot is not a reason to type the card into a different website that promises a faster result. Put the agreed check time in both calendars, in one time zone, so "tomorrow morning" does not mean two different days.

  • Ten digits, no country code, confirmed in writing.
  • Receipt email the cardholder can open.
  • A time when both of you will check, after the reference exists.
  • Provider path for anything that must happen today.
  • One payment until you know the first result.

One message both people can re-read. Send a single message that contains the ten digits, the credit amount, the fee, and the time you will both check, written in one time zone. Ask for a yes. Do not spread those facts across voice notes. When the reference exists, add it to the same thread. If the balance later matches, reply with the word posted and the last four digits. If it does not, reply with the status word from the receipt. That thread becomes your record if you need a refund days later, when memory of the call has faded. Do not put a card number in the thread. The person abroad does not need it, and a forwarded chat is a poor place for it. If card payments are still closed, the message should say waitlist only, so nobody expects a balance change that day.

Questions

Can I enter a number that starts with a plus?

Type the ten US digits. The form does not take a country code.

Will you call my family for me?

No. We do not place calls to confirm a number. That check is yours.
