Troubleshooting

Common mistakes when topping up a prepaid number

Most failed top-ups we hear about are ordinary mistakes, not exotic fraud. A digit moves. Someone pays twice because the first balance screen was slow. Someone treats the fee as if it were airtime. Someone loses the only copy of the reference. Each one is avoidable with a short pause.

This list is drawn from how guest payments fail in general. It is not a statistic about Northline customers, and it is not a claim that avoiding the list guarantees success. Posting still depends on a partner and a provider.

The almost-right number

Transposing two digits funds a stranger's line or a line that does not exist. A second entry of the number is there to catch that. Read both entries aloud. Compare the last four with the phone in front of you, or with the number the account holder just typed in a message you trust.

Do not "fix" a rejected number by trying nearby numbers until one is accepted. You may accept a real line that is not yours.

Paying again too soon

Balance screens cache. A credit can be captured on a card and still be invisible in an app for a while. A second payment creates a second order. You then have two references and, if both post, twice the credit. Wait until you know the first order's status. Use the track page. If the status says the credit was not posted, ask for the refund instead of paying again.

Counting the fee as airtime

If you need ten dollars of credit, type ten dollars as the credit. The fee is extra, on top, as the Fees page describes. If you subtract the fee in your head and type a smaller credit, the phone account receives the smaller amount. The card total is not the airtime.

A promo does not change that relationship. It can lower the fee, down to the one-dollar floor, and it does not increase the credit.

Losing the reference

The browser is a bad filing cabinet. Session storage clears. A shared computer shows the next person your screen if you leave the receipt open, which is a reason we do not keep the receipt only in the browser. The email is the copy that survives. If you typed an email you cannot open, you still have the last four digits of the number as the other lookup factor, but only if you remember the reference.

Using a guest page for a job it does not do

People try to pay a device loan, change a plan, or unlock a handset from a top-up form. The form cannot do those things. It requests a credit on a mobile number. If your goal is different, you will get a receipt that does not match the goal, and you will think the payment failed. Read the about page for the short list of what this site does not do. If the goal is only to add credit, say the dollar amount of credit out loud before you type it, then say the fee separately. Two numbers are harder to mix up than one blended total.

After you finish, do not leave the receipt open on a shared screen. The page shows a masked number and an email, which is still personal. Close it, rely on the email copy, and clear the form if you started another attempt. A half-finished form on a public computer is how the next person sees your number. Card fields, when they exist, belong to the processor, but the phone number is still yours to protect. If you were interrupted, start again from the number check instead of trusting a half-typed amount.

  • Number entered twice and checked against the handset.
  • One payment until the first status is known.
  • Credit amount chosen separately from the fee.
  • Reference stored in email, not only on screen.
  • The job confirmed as a top-up, not a plan change.

A thirty-second pause. Before you submit, read the number's last four digits, the credit, and the fee as three separate phrases. If any phrase does not match what you agreed, go back. The pause is shorter than a refund. After you submit, do not start a second payment because the button felt slow. Wait for a reference or for a clear error. An error that asks you to retype a card into the same page is a reason to stop, not a reason to hurry. On this site that card retype should not appear, because card numbers are not collected in our form. If you see one, leave. Then check whether an order reference was issued anyway. Lookup, not a second guess, answers that question. The Fees page is the place to recheck the fee if the total looked unfamiliar. Guessing a correction in the amount field is how the credit and the fee get swapped. Stop and read the three phrases again before you continue.

Questions

If I typed the wrong number, can you move the credit?

If the provider already applied it, we cannot pull it back. Contact us with the reference and we will tell you the order state.

Does a second payment speed the first one up?

No. It creates another order.
